Hilltop Millennium Green

The Site is 4.08 hectares of grassy mounding originally formed from inert industrial waste. It is close to urban housing estates and a modern industrial site. The impetus for the project came from the local community centre children's group who were fed up with the vandalised rubbish-tipped site.

The young people's pessimism about the likelyhood of more vandalism meant they did not want more play equipment. A pond was high on their wish list - commuted by local adults' concern over safety to a marshy wildlife area. New paths lead through the site where improved habitats for wildlife, seating and open play areas take priority. Contractors began work on the site in Feb 2000 and an early spring tree planting event was well supported by the local community.

The success of the Millennium Green scheme has encouraged the local council to make progress on developing an informal playing field on derelict allotment land adjacent to the Green which will complement the community facilities of the Green. This development has the support of North Tyneside Council and is part funded by a local Health Action Zone project.

Work has started on the Millennium feature. Community artist Joe Hillier is leading the local schools and community groups and working with them to create a sculpture for the site. An exhibition of the alternative designs and consultation with community and schools took place in April 2000. Remarkable life size sculptures, cast from local residents, will be a permanent feature on the hillside of the Green.

A grant of £77,854 from Millennium Greens has been matched by £66,000 from Northumbria Water Environmental Trust (NWET) - which was a real coup for the project organisers who clearly impressed the Board with their presentation and £2,500 from Bass plus local gifts in kind. North Tyneside Council are donating the land and helping with future maintenance. Further small amounts of funding have been secured by working in partnership with Age Concern for inter-generation work and the Local Authority has givenus a grant to help with community safety aspects of the site.

The Northern Environment Partnershp are the project consultants.
